Nepalese Tabac

Nepalese deer musk has a character that is very easy to recognize when it is young.

It is powerful.

Animalic.

Direct.

For this maceration, I used a high concentration of real Nepalese deer musk grains, slowly macerated in high-grade Mysore sandalwood oil in early 2026.

At the beginning, the animalic side of the musk was very strong.

For the first few months, even the sandalwood itself became heavily influenced by it.

Then something started changing.

Month by month, the sharper animalic character began to soften.

And in its place came something much more beautiful.

Powderiness. Warmth. Depth.

Today, the opening immediately reminds me of tobacco.

Not tobacco added to the oil, but a natural tobacco-like character that has developed through the musk and sandalwood together.

Then the maceration begins to open.

The powderiness becomes stronger, the sandalwood becomes softer, and that unmistakable presence of real musk starts to surround the skin.

This is something I notice with good deer musk.

It doesn’t simply sit on the skin.

It creates a cloud around you.

The Nepalese character is still more animalic than my Siberian musk maceration, and I like that difference.

It gives this one more depth and more contrast.

But what fascinates me most is watching it age.

With Nepalese musk, I can clearly smell the stages.

The first months are much more animalic.

By the fourth and fifth month, the transformation becomes obvious.

The edges begin to soften.

The tobacco-like warmth appears.

And the musk slowly moves toward that beautiful powdery character I want from an aged maceration.

You can wear this by itself if you want to experience the musk directly.

Or use it for layering with rose, oud, or another composition.

In that role, the musk does something I especially enjoy.

It gives everything around it more presence.
