Ambergris Maceration 2026

Ambergris has always fascinated me because it doesn’t need to have a powerful smell to have a powerful effect.

This maceration began with high-quality grey ambergris, slowly infused into aged Sri Lankan sandalwood oil.

Two materials that both ask for the same thing.

Time.

When I first prepared it, the sandalwood naturally had the stronger voice. But as the ambergris began to settle into the oil, something beautiful started happening.

The character became sweeter.

Saltier.

More oceanic.

And slowly, that unmistakable ambergris character began coming through.

There is something difficult to describe about real ambergris. It carries the feeling of the ocean without simply smelling aquatic. There is saltiness, warmth, sweetness and something almost airy about it.

And this is exactly why I love using ambergris in perfumery.

It isn’t only about its smell.

It is about what it does to everything around it.

Ambergris can give a perfume space. It can help the fragrance open up, travel from the skin and project in a way that is difficult to understand until you experience it inside a composition.

Here, I wanted to experience that material in one of the simplest ways possible.

Grey ambergris.

Aged Sri Lankan sandalwood.

And time.

Nothing needs to be rushed.

The maceration will continue to change, and that is part of its beauty.

What you smell today may not be exactly what you smell a year from now.

This is a living material, still becoming itself.
