Himalayan Deer Musk Maceration 2024

There are many ways to use deer musk in perfumery.

But sometimes, I don’t want to hide it inside a composition.

I want to smell the musk itself.

This maceration was prepared in 2024 using a very high concentration of real deer musk grains, slowly macerated in Mysore sandalwood oil.

Nothing complicated.

Just two extraordinary natural materials, and time.

When this maceration was younger, the animalic character of the musk was naturally stronger. But aging has changed it.

The animalic side is still there, because real deer musk should have that character, but it has become smoother, rounder and much more refined.

What comes forward now is something I love about good musk.

Powderiness. Skin. Warmth. And an unexpected freshness.

When it first touches the skin, there is almost a burst from the musk, similar to the sensation you experience when smelling real musk grains closely.

But here, that burst feels cooler.

Almost minty.

Then the Mysore sandalwood begins to warm everything underneath, giving the musk a smooth, woody foundation and allowing it to stay close to the skin for a very long time.

This is musk.

Wear a small amount by itself when you simply want to experience the character of aged deer musk, or use it for layering with oud, rose, attars or other compositions.

For a perfumer, it can become part of a creation.

For someone who simply loves musk, it needs nothing else.

And with every year that passes, I expect it to continue changing.

The sharper animalic edges soften.

The powderiness grows.

The materials become more connected.

That is why I love maceration.

The formula may be finished, but time continues the work.
