Malayan Caramel

Malayan Caramel came from a distillation I approached with a very different expectation.

For this oil, I used only very high grade Malaysian material, broken chips and tiny pieces from exceptional Malaysian oud wood. My intention was to chase something older in character, something darker, more bitter, and closer to the classic old Malaysian profile I have been searching for over the years.

But the result surprised me completely.

Instead of bitterness, the oil opened with an extraordinary smoothness. From the first smell, it carried a soft caramel and vanilla like character, rich and powerful, yet incredibly refined. As it developed on skin, that creamy opening became powdery, and the oil took on a soft, elegant texture that stayed for a very long time.

What makes this oil special for me is its drydown.

After the powdery sweetness settles, it begins to remind me of something very personal, the smell of old, high grade Malaysian oud wood before burning. The same smell I know from revisiting aged sinking grade Malaysian chips that I have kept in my collection for many years.

That is why this oil means so much to me.

It was not the oil I expected to distill, but it became one of the most beautiful Malaysian oils I have ever smelled. Smooth, powdery, deeply refined, and unmistakably artisanal, Malayan Caramel feels like a distillation that reveals a different side of Malaysian oud.
