There are some oils I bought to sell, and then there are oils I bought because I simply wanted to keep them.
Filipino Blue 2019 belongs to the second category.
I came across this oil around the end of 2019, when I was working with one of the largest Chinese suppliers of Filipino oud at the time.
He had distilled an exceptionally high-grade batch of oud from Leyte, Philippines, using old, carefully selected material of a quality that was already becoming increasingly difficult to find.
When I first smelled it, I knew there was something different about this oil.
For years, I had been searching for Filipino oud oils that could truly represent the character of the highest-grade Filipino wood. I knew the aroma of good Filipino agarwood on charcoal, but finding that same unmistakable identity preserved in oil was another matter.
This was one of the first Filipino oils that gave me exactly that feeling.
The opening is dark, deep and remarkably resinous.
If I had to describe its character through a colour, I would call it dark blue.
There is something unmistakably Filipino about that blue character. It has depth and richness, but it also carries a certain clarity that makes it very different from the heavier styles of oud commonly associated with other origins.
What makes this oil particularly interesting is how it develops on the skin.
The first few minutes are powerful and resinous. But after around fifteen to thirty minutes, the oil begins to reveal its most beautiful side.
The depth remains, but a delicate floral character begins to emerge. The edges become softer, and a beautiful powderiness slowly develops.
This is where I find the oil truly exceptional.
There are moments when it reminds me of certain old Cambodian oils, particularly in its richness and depth. At other moments, I notice a character that makes me think of high-grade Ceyloni oud.
Yet throughout the experience, it remains unmistakably Filipino.
Another thing I particularly appreciate is its cleanliness.
There are no barnyard notes, no fermented character and none of the unpleasant animalic qualities that I personally do not want in an oud oil.
Instead, the oil allows the natural beauty of the wood to speak for itself.
And that is exactly what I have always wanted from oud distillation.
